City of London Corporation

The City of London Corporation (also known as the Corporation of London) is the municipal governing body of the City of London. It exercises control only over the City (the "Square Mile", so called for its approximate area), and not over Greater London. It has three main aims: to promote the city as the world's leading international financial and business centre; to provide local government services; and to provide a range of additional services for the benefit of London, Londoners and the nation.

County of London

A county of England from 1889 to 1965, corresponding to the area today known as Inner London. It was created as part of the general introduction of elected county government in England, by way of the Local Government Act 1888. The Act created an administrative County of London, which included within its territory the City of London. However, the City of London and the County of London formed separate counties for "non-administrative" purposes.^[1] The local authority for the county was the London County Council (LCC), who performed initially only a limited range of functions, but gained further powers during its 76 year existence. The Metropolitan Borough of Westminster was a metropolitan borough in the County of London, England, from 1900 to 1965.

By royal charter dated 29 October 1900 the borough was granted the title City of Westminster. Westminster had originally been created a city and seat of the short-lived Diocese of Westminster in 1541. The diocese was suppressed in 1550, but the area was still known as a "city", although without official sanction.

Clapham Common

Clapham Common is an 89 hectare (220 acre) triangular area of grassland situated between Clapham, Battersea and Balham in south London, England. It was historically common land for the parishes of Battersea and Clapham, but was converted to parkland under the terms of the Metropolitan Commons Act 1878.

43 hectares (108 acres) of the common (the area historically known as Battersea Common) are within the London Borough of Wandsworth. Although the Common is wholly managed and maintained by the London Borough of Lambeth, the policing of the open space is divided between the Wandsworth and Lambeth borough "commands" of the Metropolitan Police, which follow the local government boundaries.

Subterranean London

The metropolis of London has been occupied for millennia, and has over that time acquired a large number of subterranean structures.

Everest Base Camp

There are two base camps on opposite sides of Mount Everest: to the south in Nepal, and to the north in Tibet. Located at an altitude of 5,360 metres (17,590 ft) South Base Camp is in Nepal, and at 5,208 metres (17,087 ft) North Base Camp is in Tibet. These camps are rudimentary campsites on Mount Everest that are used by mountain climbers during their ascent and descent. South Base Camp is used when climbing via the southeast ridge, while North Base Camp is used when climbing via the northeast ridge.

Kensal Town

Kensal Town is a district of London, England. It is located at the boundary of the City of Westminster and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. It is included in the W postcode area and was first recorded in 1876 as Kensal New Town. This name had been used since the 1840's to distinguish the area south of the Harrow Road where new housing was largely occupied by Irish immigrants. The most noted resident was dog dealer Bill George, whose establishment Canine Castle was on the Kensal Road.

Trellick Tower

Trellick Tower is a 31-storey block of flats in North Kensington, London, England. It was designed in the Brutalist style by architect Ernő Goldfinger,^[2] after a commission from the Greater London Council in 1966, and completed in 1972. It is a Grade II* listed building and is 98 metres (322 ft) tall (120 metres (394 ft) including the communications mast).

Goldfinger's design is based on his earlier and slightly smaller Balfron Tower (in Poplar, east London), and is in effect a sister building. It is also similar to Anniesland Court in Glasgow, design by J Holmes & Partners and completed in 1968. It has a long, thin profile, with a separate lift and service tower linked at every third storey to the access corridors in the main building; flats above and below the corridor levels have internal stairs. The building contains 217 flats and was originally entirely owned by the GLC with the flats rented as council flats. Shortly after its completion the building was transferred to the local council (the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea). Most of the flats are still social housing, but a significant minority are now privately owned.

Gloucester Road

Gloucester Road (B325) is a street in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea of London. It runs north-south between Kensington Road (at which point it is known as Palace Gate) and Old Brompton Road at the south end. Ladbroke Grove is a road in West London, and is also the name given to the immediate area surrounding the road. Running from Notting Hill in the south to Kensal Green in the north, it is located in North Kensington and straddles the W10 and W11 postal districts. Ladbroke Grove tube station is located on the road, at the point where it is crossed by the Westway. It is also the nearest tube station to Portobello Road Market.

It is the main road on the route of the annual Notting Hill Carnival in August.
